APPALACHIAN COTTAGE SCHOOL
Using books and soil to nurture souls
ABOUT ACS
Appalachian Cottage School offers a Christ-centered, liberal arts education inspired by Charlotte Mason. We combine ideas from living books with hands-on agricultural experiences to cultivate knowledge, build skills, and foster a love for God’s creation. Our aim is to help children grow in wisdom and pursue what is True, Good, and Beautiful.

UNIQUE HYBRID MODEL
We offer in-person learning two days a week, 24 weeks per year, preserving the flexibility home educators depend on while providing the accountability and sustainability found in community.

NATURE-BASED LEARNING
Our outdoor-focused curriculum immerses students in the wonders of the natural world, fostering a deep connection to the environment and building agricultural skills.

RICH LIBERAL ARTS CURRICULUM
Our curriculum includes literature, composition, history, geography, science, music, art, handicrafts, nature lore, and poetry to prepare students for wherever life takes them.

STRONG COMMUNITY FOCUS
We provide a supportive, close-knit community where students and families thrive together in their educational journeys, seeking to build a space where Christian faith is both shared and strengthened.

AGE-APPROPRIATE CURRICULUM

PREPPERS (Ages 4-5)
The Preppers class focuses on fostering a natural love for learning through exploration and play-based activities. Emphasis is placed on sensory experiences, nature walks, gardening, and creative handicrafts, providing students with opportunities to engage with their environment. The primary objective is to develop fine and gross motor skills, sensory awareness, and early literacy in a gentle and nurturing atmosphere.

FORM 1 (Ages 6-8)
Form I encourages a deeper appreciation of nature and the development of observational skills through structured nature walks, basic gardening, and animal care. Students are introduced to foundational concepts in literature, geography, and science, while also learning Spanish and using presentations to build public speaking skills. The goal is to nurture attention, responsibility, and early academic skills while encouraging confident communication and a love for language.

FORM II (Ages 9-11)
Form II builds on the foundations set in earlier years, promoting analytical thinking through more complex studies in science, history, and geography. Students engage in Latin language studies, read classic literature, and develop their skills in map-making, scientific experiments, and detailed journaling. The goal is to cultivate independence, critical thinking, and a broader understanding of the world through a variety of engaging, multi-disciplinary activities.

FORM III (Ages 12-14)
Form III emphasizes a mature approach to learning, combining in-depth studies in literature, science, and history with advanced handicrafts and Latin grammar. Students focus on building study skills, cultivating self-governance through habit training, and practicing advanced oral and written narrations to enhance their articulation and analytical abilities. This class seeks to prepare students for higher-level academic work and lifelong learning by fostering a strong work ethic and intellectual curiosity.
