Grab a jar and get ready to explore! Life on the Farm: Bugs! invites young naturalists to discover the incredible variety of insects and other tiny creatures living right beneath our feet, among the flowers, and throughout the garden.
We'll head outdoors for a bug hunt across the farm, searching for beetles, ants, ladybugs, caterpillars, butterflies, squash bugs, stink bugs, and whatever else the season brings our way. Rather than simply naming what we find, students will practice slowing down and looking closely—observing where creatures live, how they move, what they eat, how their bodies are designed, and the roles they play in the farm ecosystem.
We'll bring our discoveries back to our learning space for closer investigation and use what we've observed to create large cardboard bug replicas, combining science, engineering, and art as students recreate important anatomical features of their chosen creatures.
The day also includes time for lunch and unstructured outdoor play, giving children space to explore, imagine, and enjoy being together on the farm.
Students should pack a lunch and come dressed for outdoor exploration.
What We'll Explore
Hunt for and safely observe insects and other small invertebrates around the farm
Practice using observation to identify and compare our discoveries
Learn the basic characteristics of insects, including head, thorax, abdomen, six legs, antennae, and wings
Discover why some of the creatures we find—such as spiders—aren't insects at all
Look for evidence of complete and incomplete metamorphosis
Consider which insects are pollinators, predators, decomposers, herbivores, or garden pests
Explore relationships between insects, plants, animals, and the farm
Create a large cardboard model inspired by a creature discovered during our bug hunt
Enjoy lunch and free play on the farm
