Life on the Farm: Seeds & Herbs – Ages 5–10
Tuesday, October 27, 2026 | 10:00 AM–2:00 PM | $175 First-Time Students | $145 Returning Students
Every seed holds the promise of a new plant, and every herb has something interesting to discover!
During this hands-on Farm School day, students will explore the fascinating world of seeds and herbs, learning how plants reproduce, how seeds travel, and how the plants growing around us provide food and other useful materials.
We'll begin by exploring the farm to collect and examine seeds from trees, flowers, and garden plants. Students will compare seeds of different shapes, sizes, and colors, discovering how seeds develop, what they need to grow, and the many ways plants spread their seeds.
We'll harvest seeds from pumpkins, peppers, ground cherries, and other seasonal crops, learning how seeds are collected, cleaned, dried, and saved for future planting. We'll also prepare pumpkin seeds for roasting!
Next, we'll investigate herbs grown and harvested on the farm. Students will use their senses to explore the aromas, textures, and uses of plants such as mint, nasturtium, and calendula. We'll learn how herbs are harvested, dried, and prepared for use in cooking and traditional plant-based products.
Using calendula-infused oil and beeswax, students will make their own calendula balm to take home. We'll also grind and combine dried culinary herbs to create a simple seasoning blend.
Finally, we'll bring nature, mathematics, and art together by creating colorful seed mandalas. Using pumpkin seeds, beans, lentils, and other seeds, students will explore patterns, shapes, colors, and symmetry while designing their own botanical mosaics.
Throughout the day, students will discover the connections between botany, agriculture, food, art, and everyday life.
This is a day for curious young learners who enjoy exploring outdoors, working with their hands, making discoveries, and creating something special from the plants around them.
