Life on the Farm: Leaves – Ages 10–18
Friday, October 23, 2026 | 10:00 AM–2:00 PM
Buckland Family Farm | 2325 Flat Top Egeria Road | Flat Top, WV 25841
$175 First-Time Students | $145 Returning Students
Every leaf tells a story—about the plant it came from, the work it performs, and the changing seasons.
During this hands-on Farm School day, students will explore the science and art of autumn leaves through botanical fieldwork, scientific experimentation, specimen preservation, and nature-inspired art.
We'll begin by collecting and identifying leaves from trees and other plants growing around the farm. Students will examine leaf shape, margins, venation, arrangement, texture, and color, using their observations and identification resources to distinguish between species. We'll also investigate the pigments responsible for the changing colors of autumn leaves and the seasonal processes that cause leaves to change color and fall.
Next, we'll take a closer look at the remarkable work happening inside a leaf. Students will study leaf anatomy and photosynthesis, exploring how plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce sugars and release oxygen.
Using spinach leaves, students will conduct a photosynthesis experiment comparing the effects of different light conditions. They'll make predictions, observe results, record data, and consider the variables that influence the rate of photosynthesis.
We'll also explore botanical preservation, learning how leaves can be collected, pressed, and preserved for future study and enjoyment.
Finally, students will bring science and art together by creating an original autumn leaf collage. Using the colors, shapes, and textures of real leaves, students will design a bird or other nature-inspired silhouette, arranging and layering botanical materials to create a unique work of art.
Throughout the day, students will be encouraged to observe carefully, think scientifically, work creatively, and appreciate the beauty and complexity of the natural world.
This is a day for curious students who enjoy exploring outdoors, conducting experiments, making things with their hands, and discovering the connections between science, agriculture, and art.
